More Than Meets the Eye: Cleaning Windows at Height

It might seem like a simple job on the surface, but cleaning windows at height requires far more than most people realise.

Health and safety are the number one priority. Window cleaning can become highly repetitive, to the point where it feels like autopilot kicks in and the windows start cleaning themselves. But in rope access, that kind of complacency can be dangerous. That’s why rope access technicians are trained to stay alert, especially during routine or repetitive tasks where it’s easy to switch off.

Every job starts with narrowing down the safety requirements and choosing rope access equipment that suits the task. This includes selecting the right gear, maintaining it properly, using safe rope techniques, and identifying the most suitable method for the work. Hazards are identified early, with controls put in place to eliminate, isolate, or minimise risk.

The process doesn’t stop once the job begins — repeating and constantly reviewing these safety controls is what creates a safe working environment, not just for us, but for everyone nearby.

Here are just a few key steps involved:

  1. Planning

  2. Task analysis

  3. Hazard identification

  4. Rescue plan and health & safety strategy

  5. Selecting the correct tools and equipment

There’s plenty more that goes into the process — but we’ll cover that in the next blog with MB Property Services.
